According to Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, Apple has sent a letter to patent troll legitimate businessmen Lodsys stating that it believes its developers are covered by the license Apple has (and Lodsys confirmed) relating to in-app purchases.

My objective advice would be for Lodsys to change their recently-soiled underwear and resume their post under their bridge, but I’d really love to see Lodsys persist and have Apple nuke the site from orbit.

It’s the only way to be sure.

  1. But… the Substantial Dollar Value…!

Seriously, though. I don’t think this will be the end of it. It seems too simple, somehow.

I guess you could say I have a bad feeling about this drop.

  2. Trolls are nothing if not persistent, so I agree we haven’t heard the last of them. Besides, it would deprive me the pleasure of seeing them get slapped around again down the road.

The most important thing about the letter is that Apple is making its position clear so developers can go back to their knitting.

  3. Okay, I know this is an emotional moment for all of us. I know that. But let’s not make snap judgments, please. These trolls are clearly an important species we’re dealing with and I don’t think that you or I, or *anybody*, and that includes Apple, has the right to arbitrarily exterminate them.

  4. And you knew right then that Paul Reiser would never play anything but a douchebag on screen. Wonder if he knew that then.
