People were expecting an iPad Mini – or Air – or whatever at today’s Apple event, but what they got was probably unprecedented in terms of an Apple product announcement: simultaneous major-feature upgrades to a laptop, desktop and a portable device all at the same time. The iMac’s new profile has transformed it into a legitimate reason to purchase another desktop; the Retina MacBook Pro creeps us closer to that pinnacle of the laptop computing paradigm well all know is coming (the Retina MacBook Air); the new iPad, the most modest of the announcements, is faster and has a better camera at the same price and the iPad Mini is…well…like a big iPod Touch (in the best possible way).
People will no doubt continue to leak from their mouthholes about how these designs are evolutionary. That’s like saying a Kershaw Chef’s knife is just a sharper piece of flint. Apple is a company that continues to provide compelling reasons for people to move to the newest generation of its devices – every generation. That’s pretty damn incredible.
