I guess Apple bought a certain company, one which I had insisted it wouldn’t buy. I wrote 2 posts about it; I talked a lot of shit on Twitter. I was poised to take my victory lap once this week passed without an announcement.

Then it happened. I guess that does it for my career as an analyst.

Why would Apple do something for which several analysts had no explanation? The bottom line is that it doesn’t matter. This is obviously Tim Cook’s Apple. As for my poo-pooing the acquisition using the “Apple-has-the-best-designers-and-engineers-in-the-world-they-can-do-anything” logic, Cook spoke directly to that in an interview with the New York Times:

“Could Eddy’s team have built a subscription service? Of course. We could’ve built those 27 other things [Apple’s acquisitions in the last year] since ourselves, too. You don’t build everything yourself. It’s not one thing that excites us here. It’s the people. It’s the service.”

So there you have it. Instead of their usual chumming of the pageview waters, the speculators finally turned in a big scoop.

  1. Holy crap! Working like a maniac today so I didn’t check the news… until I took a break now. I still think it won’t be the worst deal ever made… assuming the sales numbers are remotely close they should be able to make up most of the purchase on the headphones (hopefully while adding some decent tech in the damn things) and the streaming. So this isn’t a Motorola by any stretch.

But I still don’t completely see this…. Iovine must have some masterful negotiating skills to command the 3 bill price tag. Hopefully he uses them for Apple’s benefit as well…

  2. Blaargh – Cook says Iovine has been brought on board to bridge the cultural gap between LA & Silicon Valley. Negotiating with Muzak Biz needs a Specialist.

JT – You gonna apologise to the FT? The comparison to the South Korea Times was pretty strong, i imagine they were upset! :-)

    >>career as an analyst<<

    Analyst? Anal Cyst!

Be a Commentator instead! Then there's no need to say sorry.

Keep up the great Work please.

  3. I blame the Zionists…

  4. I probably read this somewhere else, but I think this is first about bolstering the media strategy. I need to get more background on Iovine, but the buzz is the guy can hustle. If Apple is going to get serious about the living room, which I think we all agree they have to, Fast Eddy isn’t getting the content done. Iovine might be the guy that can. Maybe Cook didn’t have to have Cue hit the bricks outright to avoid the “Browett, Forstall and now this?!” angle that would be taken by the tech press – guaranteed. Maybe Cue does some things really well. Guess we’ll see.

  5. “Apologize” is a strong word, but I did get a little aggressive with the name-calling. I’m all for that approach – when I’m right. And I’ll always be more commentator than analyst – the latter group is populated too densely with dickholes.

    See? I’m doing it again.

  6. Who runs Bartertown?

  7. I can’t speak to Iovine personally, but I know that he was Steve’s contact with the music biz during the iPod/iTunes days. No, they’re not interested in the crappy headphones — though if you listen to rap and hip-hop, I understand a little extra bass is desirable– but also, I’d like to see a headset that was designed by Jonny Ive and had some kind of control system built in with the lightning cable… But this is a media play.
